Permits & inspections

Electrical permits are issued by the District's Department of Buildings (DOB): trade permits are started through DOB's Permit Wizard (residential projects, and trade permits for commercial projects), and multi-unit residential/commercial permit applications are submitted through the Citizen Access Portal. Inspections of completed work under an electrical permit are DOB construction inspections - scheduled through Tertius, DOB's online marketplace for construction inspections (which books either a DOB inspector or an approved third-party inspection agency), or by phone at (202) 671-3500 (DOB inspections site and DOB applications page, dob.dc.gov, read firsthand 2026-10-25).

Things to watch for

The house red-flag page — doctrine shown wrong, safety-held entries, field-proven practice — is Things to watch for.

Working notes

Verified on official DOB material: the 2017 DC Construction Codes consist of the 2015 ICC family, the 2014 National Electrical Code and 2013 ASHRAE 90.1 as amended by DCMR Title 12 sections A-M; codes were passively approved by the Council April 9, 2020 and became effective May 29, 2020 (Notice of Final Rulemaking, 67 DCR 23-Part 2). The Electrical Code component is the 2014 NEC as amended by the 2017 Supplement (DCMR 12C). PENDING STRUCTURE: DOB's code-development page (Fall 2026) puts a full code update - including Electrical - on a rulemaking track with final codes targeted for late 2027; nothing newer is in force, so 2014 NEC remains the recorded in-force edition. Licensing classes are Journeyman and Master Electrician under the Board of Industrial Trades (a June 2025 DLCP bulletin on MD-DC reciprocity confirms both classes and the Board's DLCP home). URL CORRECTION (E-FIX 1, 2026-10-25, per E-QA 1 defect D-3): adoption_source_url and amendments_url previously pointed to DOB's 2017 DC Green Construction Code PDF; both now point to the official DC Council LIMS package for PR23-0673 (the '2017 District of Columbia Construction Codes Approval Resolution of 2020'), which encloses the full text of the Electrical Code Supplement of 2017 (12-C DCMR) as transmitted for Council approval - that supplement text states the District of Columbia Electrical Code (2017) consists of the 2014 edition of the National Electrical Code as amended by the Electrical Code Supplement of 2017. Note the LIMS package is the approval-transmittal enclosure, not the DC Register final-rulemaking notice itself (67 DCR 23-Part 2, above). Partial now because no DC electrical permit/inspection note was verified at District level. PERMIT/INSPECTION NOTE CLOSED (E-DATA-FOLLOWUP 2, 2026-10-25): the note above was verified at District level on DOB's own pages - inspections.dob.dc.gov ('If you need an inspection of completed work you did under structural, electrical, plumbing... permits... call (202) 671-3500'; Tertius described as 'our online marketplace for construction inspections', including scheduling approved third-party agencies) and dob.dc.gov/service/more-applications (Permit Wizard 'includes Trade... Permits for residential projects and trade permits for commercial projects'; Citizen Access Portal for multi-unit residential and commercial permit applications; eRecords shows electrical permits). That was the sole remaining partial reason stated in this row; status is now verified.

Coded to schema v2 Option B at the 2026-10-27 wiring pass from the v1 row verbatim; migration settles no open facts.
