A permit is required before equipping a building with electrical conductors/equipment or altering them; the application goes to the appropriate enforcing agency (state, county, or local, per the Statewide Jurisdiction List). The State Electrical Code is the NEC with Part 8 technical amendments; 1-2 family dwelling provisions sit in the Michigan Residential Code.

Adoption (filed 2023-11-13, effective 120 days after filing) and the dual state/municipal licensing wording are verified on LARA/BCC official pages. The license-classes page returned 403 on open, so class names (electrical contractor, master, journeyman, apprentice registration, fire-alarm/sign specialty) rest on statute snippets and are partial. E-WIRING-READINESS (2026-10-26): The LARA/BCC license-classes page (license_classes_url) was read firsthand this pass (the earlier 403 does not reproduce via the curl route): it names electrical contractor, master electrician, journeyman, apprentice registration, fire alarm specialty and sign specialty - the classes the row carried from statute snippets are confirmed on the Board's own page. Row VERIFIED.
