Permits & inspections

Electrical work in Washington requires a permit and inspection, with exceptions at WAC 296-46B-901 (verified firsthand on the L&I permits page). Permits are purchased by the electrical contractor or by the property owner/homeowner doing the work. If the jobsite is in a city that does its own permits and inspections, or in Tacoma Power service area, the permit and inspection come from that jurisdiction; all other jobsites are permitted and inspected by L&I. L&I states it inspects electrical work using the 2023 NEC.

Working notes

Adoption verified firsthand in the official Washington State Register filing (WSR 24-05-085, filed 2024-02-21, effective 2024-04-01) and on the L&I permits page (L&I inspects electrical work using the 2023 National Electrical Code). PENDING - NOT IN FORCE: L&I rulemaking material adopts the 2026 NEC with an effective date of 2026-12-31 (L&I adopted-standards proposal, https://www.lni.wa.gov/licensing-permits/_docs/2508-Proposal-Adopted-Standards.pdf); at the retrieval date the in-force edition remains 2023, recorded here - do not promote the 2026 edition. Washington amendments ride inside WAC 296-46B itself; the L&I laws/rules page is the amendments reference.
